PERIODE AMERICAINE ~ AMERICAN PERIOD

monotypes ~ monoprints

1986 – 1998

Monoprints are the highlight of the American period

“The monoprints, the technique of which I learnt at the Printmaking Workshop in New York City, required an endless study of the subject beforehand in order to allow a speedy execution of the work, thereby securing the instantaneity of the movement and injecting life in the characters.

Sitting at home, I would watch “Black Entertainment TV”. On that channel I would have the opportunity to watch recordings of concerts of the jazz musicians I loved so much. Inevitably, I had to make quick sketches of their faces and their hands, of their positions. Later I would attempt to piece together these sketches in order to make a whole drawing. At the workshop, it would only take an afternoon to do the printing but the research prior to that would last for days. Most of the monoprints have been realised with the four-colour system that Stanley William Hayter taught and which I learnt at the Atelier 17 in France in 1964.
