« Avec la plume et le crayon, je pouvais représenter “l’ossature” du sujet que je regardais (avec plus ou moins de détails) en m’asseyant sur un coin de mur, au gré de mes voyages.
L’aquarelle me semblait être la seule technique apte à reproduire la lumière parfois violente des paysages, le papier blanc transparaissant derrière chaque coup de pinceau, contrairement à la gouache qui, avec l’apport du blanc sorti du tube, éteint tout l’effet de clarté.»

“With the pen and the pencil, I could represent the structure of the subject I was looking at, with more or less details, like when sitting on the edge of a wall, during one of my travels.
Watercolour seemed to be the only technique able to reproduce the sometimes violent light of landscapes. The white background of the paper would then appear behind each brush stroke, in contradistinction to the gouache which, with the addition of white from the tube, dulls all effect of brightness.”
