« Juste un mot pour expliquer un peu ce que je ressens en faisant les reproductions des oeuvres, soit picturales, soit historiques, en ce moment.
Tout d’abord, je lis et je fais un résumé dans les cahiers des différents sujets qu’il m’intéresse d’étudier. Puis je choisis une reproduction qui “à mon avis” parle du sujet en question plus qu’une autre… en y mettant mon propre rythme.
(Des centaines d’artistes ont copié les grands de tous temps en Italie, en Grèce, au Louvre.) Les anciens trouvaient que c’était un moyen efficace pour apprendre à regarder (entre autres).
Ma “relative” aisance pour faire les modelés est dûe à une longue pratique ? peut-être ? Je me ressource en quelque sorte, et nous verrons après… »

“Just a word to explain a little what I feel at this moment when doing the reproductions of works, whether pictoral or historical.
First of all, I read and write a sum-up in notebooks on the subjects I am enclined to study. Then I select a reproduction which, in ‘my opinion’, speaks of the relevant subject better than another… while introducing my own rythm into it.
(Hundreds of artists of all times have copied the great ones, be it in Italy, in Greece or in the Louvre.) The ancient ones found that this was an efficient means (amongst others) to learn to look.
The “relative” ease with which I do the contours is due to a long practice? May be? In a way, I am going back to the roots and after that we’ll see… »
